BOSTON – May 25, 2016 – The creators of the popular Boston-based
daily e-news “Sox Lunch” announced a campaign calling for the immediate commissioning
of a public statue to honor Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. The online
campaign is tagged, “Bronze Big Papi, #BronzeBigPapi #BronzePapi and it will continue
throughout the 2016 baseball season with the goal to have a “Big Papi” statue
dedicated no later than opening day 2017.
Sox
Lunch is encouraging Red Sox fans to sign a petition for the “Bronze Big Papi”
movement by signing up for http://www.soxlunch.com and also by visiting:
“David
Ortiz is our Big Papi,” said Sox Lunch founder Kevin Phelan. “He is our MVP.
David Ortiz should be forever “bronzed” and he shouldn’t have to wait around –
like the great Bill Russell did – far too long.
“Doesn’t
Big Papi deserve to join the other Baseball gods in front of our baseball
cathedral? We - the people behind SoxLunch.com - believe the time to start the
campaign to “Bronze Big Papi” is today, not 20 years from today. And, by the
way, if Papi signs-on for another season, we’ll push back the dedication to
2018!” added Phelan.
To
jump-start the season-long campaign, Sox Lunch today sent artwork, plans and
information on the petition to City Hall, the State House, Major League
Baseball, the Boston Red Sox, NESN and to Boston-based media outlets. In
addition, Sox Lunch will stage a “Bronze Big Papi” petition signing “meet-up”
for fans on May 25th (5:30pm) at the popular Baseball Tavern, near
Fenway Park. (Bronze Big Papi fans attending the meet-up must be 21+ years of
age).
