Boston Beard-a-GONE ...

The Boston Bruins lost in overtime last night and the Boston Garden crowd exited in silence.  It was pretty damn lousy.  This morning, I checked the Boston Bruins online site and clicked on the various community programs the team runs.

The Bruins do an excellent job in the Boston community and I am proud to say that I joined the effort to help raise some $83,005 (as of 10am today.)  My beard brought in a rather disappointing $220 but, as the great quote often stated by distinguished scribe, Mike Monroe of Denver Post/San Antonio Express by the way of the Santa Monica highway ay FoxSports.com, "It beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick."

Bruins Get Two Quick Ones ,,,

The press room TV was tuned to some NHL TV station that did not have the NHL game between the Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes on, so we grabbed the remote, fiddled with it and started changing channels. Next thing you know, we have TSN, and the Canadian TV coverage of the game. Eh?

Bruins post two quick goals to put Carolina back in their skate heels.

That is very, very good news for those of us hoping for a Game 7 at Boston and a full house at Johnnie's on the Side. Go Bruins.

Of course, this gives me a chance to plug the Beard-a-thon one more time. C'mon, if we get Game 7, I keep the beard a little longer and will actually POST a new photo of the "bearded one" as Joe Fav has been tagging me.

As noted in the prior post, I am literally leading with my chin and subjecting myself to tons of ridicule to help raise some money for the Boston Bruins charity foundation.  Please pledge a simple $10 (or more, if you can afford it), by pledging your support and clicking on the headline above, then type in Terry Lyons in the area of - There is a specific beard grower that you would like to support!  It is that easy.  Let's go.  I will do periodic photo updates starting with the face-off of Game 1 of the playoff series vs. The hated Habs.

Beginning Thursday, April 9 the Boston Bruins are inviting fans to grow their own playoff beards to support the B's during their playoff run by kicking-off the "Bruins Beard-A-Thon" on www.bostonbruins.com, the team’s official website. The 2009 "Bruins Beard-A-Thon" gives Bruins fans the opportunity to show their support for the team and raise money for the Boston Bruins Foundation.

The hockey playoff beard is an age-old tradition for players participating in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Fans can join in on the tradition by "growing one for the team" and inviting family, friends and business associates to pledge their playoff beards to raise money for the Boston Bruins Foundation. 

Fans can create their "Bruins Beard-A-Thon" profile by uploading their photo at www.bostonbruins.com. Participants can choose to grow their own beard and update their growth throughout the playoffs or they can grow their beard virtually by choosing the ‘Build-A-Beard’ option, giving women and children an opportunity to get involved.

Beard growers may pledge themselves by making a donation and their friends and family may also pledge their efforts.  Donations can be made in two ways, a one-time pledge (minimum $10) or a daily pledge (minimum $0.50/day).  Throughout the playoffs, fans will have the opportunity to win tickets if their beard is voted the best on BostonBruins.com.  At the end of the contest there will be various prizes for the best and worst beards as well as a prize for most money raised.

Let the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin ...

Let the games begin. The top-seeded Boston Bruins drew their legendary rivals in the Montreal Canadiens for a first-round, best-of-seven match up. At first, a match-up against the NY Rangers seemed imminent, but the Broadway Blue Shirts won their last three regular season games to gain the seventh-place seed and a seven-game match-up against the Washington Caps.

The Bruins locked up best record in the East but fell one point shy of San Jose for best record in the entire NHL. That single point will make the NBA-NHL-NLL schedule makers cringe as they begin to fight for some of the well-sought after common playoff dates upcoming over the next few weeks and months.

As a Boston-based fan with a serious (financial) interest in the success of the teams, as it relates to a steady flow of restaurant patrons into Johnnie's on the Side, I am rooting like there's "no tomorrow.' Go Bruins (Sorry Isles), Go Blazers! and Let's Go Celtics! (Sorry to all my faithful NBA team supporters... you know I did a good job of impartiality for 26+ years).
Christ, I even helped Puerto Rico and Argentina do their post game PR effort when they beat the 2004 USA Basketball Olympic team in Athens. But, the $ from extra events at The "GAH-Den" really translate nicely to the JOTS future.

But anyhow, back to hockey. Playoff HOCKEY -- the best there is.

Hockey East warmed us up. BU set the table with their stunning overtime win in the "Frozen Four" in DC on Saturday night. Now, it's time for the big boys. Lucic is the man.

The Bruins talked many of us into particpating in a program called, "Grow One for the Team."
It's a Boston Bruins "Beard-a-thon" and it will raise money for charity $25 alreaady registered and more to be pledged by friends.) It goes to Bruins charities and over the course of the year, they do a HELL of a job doing Community Relations efforts throughout Boston.

All Boston teams do a great job in the area of community relations . It makes me proud to be a newfound Bostonian. I hope to lend some time this summer at the Teddy Ebersol Fields along Storrow Drive. Teddy was my man, the little guy ofter accompanying us to the NBA Lottery or a playoff game or two. He was taken from us at such a young age and it came so suddenly in that terrible plane crash around Thanksgiving Day and the USC v Notre Dame football game, back in November of 2004. Teddy and two crew members of the ill-fated flight lost their lives but Teddy's Dad, Dick Ebersol, a lifelong friend of the extended Lyons-NBA-NBC=family and his brother Charlie.

In the meantime, I have a pretty scruffy beginning to some grey-beard fuzz that is showing some promise after three days. It better help the Bruins win some games and raise awareness for their foundation, because it's costing me serious points on the homefront as three Martin-Lyons family members are no longer in the hunt for a cuddle from Dad. We'll see...

LOts of fun as the winter weather starts to fade, the bikes are out of the garage, some spring cleaning in the works, the yard-man getting it going and T and Alexa planting all kinds of tomoto seedlings, along with some cucumbers. Next up - The Topsy Turvey tomato planter thing. Film at 11am. Mayb, we will start our own farm stand soon.
