Ramble On (VII) ...

A very thirsty batch of criminals in Dublin, Ireland pulled off the theft of the century. This one, surely bigger than the Lufthansa heist at JFK - forever memorialized in the movie, Goodfellas - has been amongst the most emailed and forwarded internet stories of 2007. (Click on Ramble on above for link)...

There is no truth to the rumor the thiefs left a case of PBRs at the scene of the crime.

Mike D'Antoni wants the Phoenix Suns to come to the stage every night, ready to play. He drew a comparison to the way Mick and the Stones come to play at concerts every night.

AZ Central columnist Paola Boivin wrote, quoting D'Antoni:

If there's a trio that can return the energy, it's Amaré Stoudemire, Shawn Marion and Leandro Barbosa. They can bring back the swagger, as long as that equates to enthusiasm, not selfishness.

It's easy to see how the Suns could fall under the spell of complacency. They're so darn good, it's hard to feel giddy about setting a nice little screen, even though D'Antoni wishes they would.

"If you watch Mick Jagger, he doesn't go out and say, 'You know I've done this for 10 years. Today I'm giving a bad concert.' " he said. "He has the same enthusiasm probably he had 20 years ago. That's what makes him great.

"This should be happening now. Live in the moment. It's a great team."

Nice job. I like the visualization, except for one thing? Calling Hollywood casting... On the Suns, who plays Mick and who is Keith Richards? Says the raven: "That, sir, is the problem."

I see a lot of press releases. They often "PR-speak" about "unique" circumstances and "strategic" marketing deals. Is there ever a time when a marketing deal is not strategic?

A very good day begins when you read Mark Kriegel on MSN Foxsports.com ... He gets it. And, for New Yorkers, George Vecsey gets it done with each and every column. And, I look forward to Bill Rhoden's Saturday morning columns and a nice cup of coffee.

If you don't get the Wall Street Journal, you are missing a ton of information. The "personal journal" and "weekend journal" are must reads for all.

Duke vs. Davidson - men's college basketball today at Noon. Must viewing,
on ESPN U.

Davis Cup (ITF) took out a large ad in the NYT to pump USA vs Russia Davis Cup matches played yesterday (both Roddick and Blake won). The problem, the ad buried the fact the event was carried on TV network "Versus." The fine print noted, "Check local listings for Vs. channel on your cable system." Larger print noted that matches would re-air on Tennis Channel.

Have you noticed that the Orlando Magic are 14-4 and among the league leaders in the NBA, along with San Antonio (14-3), Phoenix (12-4) and Boston (13-2).

Walter Iooss Jr., Paul J. Bereswell and Barton Silverman are among my heros.

(This is posted a day early as I anticipate a busy Sunday morning)...
