The state senate of New Jersey voted 21-16 (with 3 non votes) to support the repeal of the death penalty in NJ. It would mark a major step as NJ would be first state to reverse a 1976 US Supreme Court ruling which opened the door for states to allow prosecutors to seek death penalty charges for certain major crimes.
Capital punishment has been an accepted practice in these United States since the 1976 ruling.
