HBO has signed John Oliver to star in a topical comedy series slated to launch in 2014, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Presenting a satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events, the weekly show will debut on Sunday nights.
“We weren’t otherwise searching for another weekly talk show, but when we saw John Oliver handling host duties on ‘The Daily Show,’ we knew that his singular perspective and distinct voice belonged on HBO,” said Lombardo. “We are extremely excited that John has agreed to make HBO his home.”
Oliver commented, “I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now. I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at ‘The Daily Show’ for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.”

HBO Documentary on Marty Glickman: Swish!
![]() |
| Marty Glickman (HBO Sports) |
Whether you grew up in Canarsie or The Bronx, whether you attended Cardinal Hayes or Power Memorial, whether you were a fan of Joe Namath of the Jets or Fran Tarkenton of the football Giants, or whether you rooted for Mickey, Willie or the Duke, one thing was for sure. You loved Marty Glickman.
Marty Glickman was a gifted runner and accomplished athlete, an Olympian in fact, but to nearly all native New Yorkers and to a growing legion of sports announcers, Glickman was "The One." He was the best of the truly infuential sportscasters who pioneered sports from its coveted place in the radio industry to the world of live, televised and remote newscasting of the most important games of his day. Glickman's technique - that of a picture-painter and story-teller - influenced dozens of followers, many the current leaders of the sports broadcasting world, including Bob Costas (NBC, MLB Network, HBO), Mike Breen (ESPN, MSG Network) and Marv Albert (TNT, YES).
The story of Marty Glickman runs far deeper than that of any other pioneer in the field of sports broadcasting, however, as Glickman's life as a young athlete, then a Marine Corp. veteran returning from World War II, then as an accomplished broadcaster shunned because of his religious beliefs tell a deeper and most interesting story which is the subject of Martin Scorsese - Jim Freedman produced documentary which premieres on Home Box Office on Monday, August 26. "Glickman" is the first documentary film by Freedman, the producer, director and writer behind the tribute to a sportscaster who treated all the way he wanted to be treated, yet rarely could count on the same in return.
Born in the Bronx in 1917, Glickman's running abilities earned him the nickname of "The Flatbush Flash" as a high school runner and football running back who earned a scholarship to Syracuse University. Glickman defeated then world record holder Ben Johnson in the 60-yard dash and by doing so, earned the right to compete for a place on the USA's 1936 Olympic Track & Field team. His efforts on the track gave him a third place finish in a 100-meter qualifying race, but Glickman was placed fifth, most likely because of biased officials looking at his faith rather than the race results. It began a nasty turn of events which carried on at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin where the great Jesse Owens claimed three gold medals and his place in athletics infamy while Glickman was replaced on the 400-meter relay team, again because of his Jewish faith.
Glickman returned to the United States after the Olympics and was offered a $15 a night broadcast gig and he married his high school sweet-heart and began his broadcasting career in earnest, mainly doing radio re-creations of baseball games. However, when the second world war called upon the youth of the US, Glickman enlisted and was sent to fight in the Marshall Islands. When he returned, Glickman picked up on his broadcasting talent where he found a new niche, in the sport of basketball. It was his vivid descriptions of the fast-paced college and pro games at the birth of the popularity of the "city game" that brought Glickman to the forefront. "Television on radio," said CNN broadcast and talk show guru Larry King.
Yet, when it was time for the NBA to move from its very first and very modest tv deal on Dumont, to the more prominent and nationally broadcast NBC sports deal, Glickman was shunned again, this time by league officials who claimed they sought a "more Midwestern" voice for the national deal, yet the undertone of a religious biased decision was once again holding Glickman back from the job he earned outright.
Throughout the ordeal, Marty Glickman remained diligent and treated his colleagues, the athletes and his co-workers with respect as his graceful manner and strong command of a new, descriptive language of sports, often simple and location-based description, painted pictures for listeners of professional football games on radio and even high school football on tv. In fact, Glickman gave Freedman, the documentary's main producer, his very first job in the field when the younger Freedman was asked by Glickman to produce a weekend broadcast that his older brother could no longer help create.
"Glickman captures the nobility and excitement of Marty himself," said another "Marty" - in Martin Scorsese. "Inventive, accessible and veracious, a New York staple who ignited sports and taught America the only way to experience the games."

NewsRoom: Season Two ... the Trailer
Now, that's what I call a trailer...
(PS: The stuff that HBO does to promote its original programming is a page out of the book that the folks on Broadway need to read. Stated clearly and honestly, my prior criticism of Broadway theatre promotion might've been a little unfair since I didn't include specifics on a few of the best methods to sell some more play tickets.).

Will Stars Align for Constellation?
New Sports Index rewards good; unable to quantify "Knuckleheads"
By TERRY LYONS, Editor-in-Chief of DigitalSportsDesk
NEW YORK, January 28, 2013 - Former HBO Boxing guru Seth Abraham, a true mensch of a sports exec and an eloquent press conference host, explained the concept best when he compared his venture's sports player index to the US News & World Report's annual listing of Top U.S. Colleges but the rankings of colleges and their consistent performances provide students with a solid road map while an index of publicly reported gossip on sports stars might lend to a highly speculative product. The NYU-Tisch Sports Index might provide marketers with a valued list one day but when the wind blows and tales of concusion impact, depression, crime, suicide and many of the other terrible issues facing professional sports - particularly the most popular U.S. pro sport, NFL Football, the index might be as worthless as an IPO prediction of Facebook.
![]() |
| The late Junior Seau |
The news of the group's formation was headlining a press conference to announce the index and its connection to - get this - a wealth advisory group seeking business from soon-to-be-retiring professional athletes. As the news release was put-forth, the assembled group was duely impressed with solid presentations, tales of Mike Tyson's most lavish BMW present-giving, and smiley-face visions of grandoise from the academia side of the operation, but the faces in the crowd grew a bit more perplexed when the threesome of suits, including former NFL QB Steve Bono, was asked how the late Junior Seau might've fared on the index one day while he was filming "Sports Jobs" for Versus but how that might've looked another day, say May 2, 2012, when the sports and football world mourned his death from a self-inflicted shot gun blast which ended a downward spiraling post-NFL career.
While it is obvious that having such a listing is better than not having one, the proof of such a concept will only be evident when the first listing is made public, hopefully sometime in the very near future. Surely, the likes of Grant Hill, Tom Brady, Mario Lemeiux, John Elway, Yao Ming or David Robinson will fare quite well in the listing which will recognize the most marketable, fan-favorite, camera-ready superstars, and the listing will only go so far, the uncertainty of the human spirit, never-mind a spirit concussed at high rates - the NYU-Tisch-Constellation sports index might be more a roll of the dice than a Moneyball print-out. Elway and his - "I'm comfortable in my own skin" aura will be just what the NYU professors have to offer.
So, let the official press release provide some insight:
"Constellation Wealth Advisors LLC, one of the leading advisory firms in the area of private financial management, and the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management at the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS) today announced a research study to gauge the overall financial health and well-being of athletes in their post-professional athletic careers. The scope of the research will include analyzing the attributes of retired athletes who have had careers in either team or individual sports and will take into account several factors including their financial status and their participation in philanthropic initiatives. The initial findings of the study are expected to be released later in 2013. It is believed to be the only study of its kind to date.
“We are very pleased to be able to work with Constellation Wealth Advisors LLC,” said Robert Boland, academic chair of the NYU-SCPS Tisch Center. “All too often, the media dwells upon the failures of athletes after their professional careers have ended, but there are numerous examples of those who have excelled. We expect that this research will help to define what is needed to ensure post-career success for future generations of athletes.”
“We have seen so many athletes and individuals who are not prepared to deal with the uncertainty of today’s volatile financial environment. As a company that provides services to select athletes, we are very pleased to be able to assist NYU-SCPS in helping to create this index of success,” said Paul Tramontano, co-CEO of Constellation Wealth Advisors LLC. “We think that this type of study will help any athlete, and many individuals, to gain a better understanding of what it takes to be successful on a multitude of fronts once they have retired.”
The research will be based upon publicly available data and will include interviews with former athletes who have achieved success in various categories during the post-career phase of their lives. The information will be evaluated to identify successful patterns and practices. In addition to Constellation Wealth Advisors, a number of independent consultants in various fields will be asked to offer their perspective on the results. The research will culminate in identifying a top group of athletes who will be honored for their overall post-professional success and well-being.
Constellation conceived of the idea for the research project after working with a number of athletes and identifying how certain key attributes, investment practices, and philanthropic involvement helped to provide a solid foundation for success in retirement years. Steve Bono, former quarterback with the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, and Joe Ogilvie, a touring PGA Professional, are both principals with Constellation and will be among those involved in this project. The project team will be led by Seth Abraham, the former head of HBO Sports and Madison Square Garden Entertainment, who is a longtime personal advisor to a host of athletes and celebrities.
The NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies was established in 1934, NYU-SCPS (scps.nyu.edu) is one of NYU’s several degree-granting schools and colleges, each with a unique academic profile. The reputation of NYU-SCPS arises from its place as the NYU home for study and applied research related to key knowledge-based industries where the New York region leads globally. This is manifest in the School’s diverse graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs in fields such as Real Estate and Construction Management; Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management; Global Affairs; Philanthropy and Fundraising; Graphic Communications Media, Publishing, and Digital Arts; Human Capital Management, Marketing, and Public Relations; with complementary strengths in the Liberal and Allied Arts; Translation and Interpreting; Management and Information Technology; and Finance and Taxation. More than 100 distinguished full-time faculty members collaborate with an exceptional cadre of practitioner/adjunct faculty and lecturers to create vibrant professional and academic networks that attract nearly 5,000 degree-seeking students from around the globe. In addition, the School fulfills the recurrent continuing higher education needs of local and professional communities, as evidenced by 55,000 annual enrollments in individual courses, specialized certificate programs, conferences, workshops, seminars, and public events. The School’s community is enriched by more than 25,000 degree-holding alumni worldwide, many of whom serve as mentors, guest speakers, and advisory board members. Meanwhile, Constellation Wealth Advisors LLC is an independent multifamily investment office with an uncompromising commitment to the best interests of our clients. We are committed to long-term relationships with our client families to help them reach and maintain their life goals, and to simplify the inevitable complexities that come with wealth."
The key words written within the release - "publicly available data" - means there won't be P.I.'s snooping around the NFL retirement homes nor will they be crunching public opinion, inuendo or the dreaded rumor-mill, the index researchers will be more apt to read The Wall Street Journal, the Globe & Mail and Bloomberg wire than they will be consulting the Bleacher Report or Ball Don't Lie blogosphere.

And, the Emmy Goes to ...

The awards were presented by a distinguished group of sports figures and television personalities including veteran Bob Costas (host of NBC’s upcoming Olympic coverage in Beijing and NBC’s Football Night in America; host of HBO’s “Costas Now” and “Inside the NFL”); Cris Collinsworth (sports analyst for NBC’s NFL coverage and HBO’s “Inside the NFL”); Jim Nantz (lead play-by-play announcer of The NFL on CBS and play-by-play broadcaster for NCAA college basketball and golf on CBS); Joe Buck (sports announcer FOX Sports NFL and MLB); Charles Barkley (11-time NBA All-Star and eight season veteran as NBA analyst for TNT); Mike Tirico (host of ESPN’s Monday Night Football, The Masters and his daily show on ESPN Radio); Phil Simms (Super Bowl XXI MVP and lead game analyst The NFL on CBS); Tim McCarver (two time- St. Louis Cardinals World Series Champion and sports announcer for MLB on FOX); Chip Carey (play-by-play for MLB Playoffs on TBS); Lisa Salters (ESPN reporter since 2000 now seen on the new E:60 program); Jay Bilas (studio and game analyst for NCAA college basketball for 13-years at ESPN); Cris Carter (3-time NFL All-Pro, 8 straight Pro-Bowls, analyst HBO’s Inside the NFL and Yahoo Sports); and Frank Deford (senior contributing writer for Sports Illustrated and commentator for HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel).
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Frank Chirkinian, referred to by many as the “Father of Televised Golf, “ and winner of four Emmy Awards. Chirkinian, who spent his entire career at CBS, was given the task in 1958 to figure out how to televise the game of golf. Chirkinian went on to produce 38 consecutive Masters Tournament telecasts making golf a mainstay in sports broadcasting and creating the standard against which all golf telecasts are still measured. Chirkinian’s career encompassed the entire gamut of sports television from the 1960 Summer Olympics to the 1991 Masters Tournament, for which he received the prestigious Peabody Award. His production techniques revolutionized sports coverage and influenced how broadcasters around the world covered tournaments on television.
Winners in 30 categories including outstanding live sports special, sports documentary, studio show, play-by-play personality, and studio analyst were honored. The Sports Emmy® Award recipients were chosen by a Blue Ribbon Panel of their peers from over 750 entries. The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast throughout the 2007 calendar year.
American Airlines and Thomson Grass Valley are the official sponsors of the 29th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards. Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal is the exclusive magazine partner.

WINNERS OF 29th ANNUAL SPORTS EMMY® AWARDS ANNOUNCED BY NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES
Frank Chirkinian Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award
New York, NY – April 28, 2008 – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announced the winners tonight of the 29th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards at a special ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

John Edwards to make a move?
It was great to see the ovation bestowed upon John Edwards when he joined Bill Maher on the stage for a live interview on HBO. Maher, to my surprise called Edwards a 'sure' way for Democrats to win the election over a Republican nominee.
Edwards certainly did not disagree.
Even though Edwards is trailing HC and BObama in the current polls, we can all remember quite well that Howard Dean was the front runner at the same point in time in 2004.
Edwards is confident.
Edwards is smart.
Edwards should be the next president of the United States.
In a blog about the TV appearance, one of the first comments/replies read like this:
Bill Maher is right to look at Edwards as a sure winner. He has laid out a very specific detailed policy on domestic issues and foreign policies alike. And he's done it courageously, and usually before everyone else unlike some of his main competitors who choose to borrow from the policies of others who have laid out their plans to the American people beforehand. Once the mainstream media moves beyond the excitement of the first Black president or the first woman president and looks at whose offering for hope and new direction without many details (Barack), once they examine who is offering little details on how they will move this country in the right direction so they can stay on top of public opinion polls and avoid too much scrutiny (Hillary) they will be forced to look at the best of the Democratic ticket - people like Edwards, Richardson and dare I say Biden who would make an excellent President if he ever learned how to close his mouth.
America was wrong in 2004 when they chose Kerry to lead the Democratic ticket instead of Edwards. If the choice was reversed I think this country would have had a different 8 years than we've had under Bush/Cheney. We can't get it wrong again.
