Spain Looks to Italy for Head Coach for 2010-2012

USA Basketball's Jerry Colangelo will soon appoint a head coach for the US Senior Men's National team for the time period of the 2010 World Championship (Istanbul, Turkey) and the 2012 Olympic Games (London, Great Britain). Media speculation has included a 'second term' for Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke or the promotion of 2006-2008 assistant coach Mike D'Antoni of the New York Knicks.

The USA's biggest rival, Spain, just named Sergio Scariolo, a coach from Italy, to take over the national team duties. Read the item written earlier this week by the Associated Press from Madrid:

Spain appoints Scariolo as coach on 4-year deal

MADRID (AP)—Sergio Scariolo will coach Spain’s national basketball team until 2013.

The Italian agreed to a four-year contract to replace Aitor Garcia Reneses, who led Spain to the silver medal at last year’s Beijing Games.

Scariolo, who will leave his post at Russian club Khimki, will be presented by the Spanish basketball federation later this month.

“It’s a great honor to coach Spain, I’m filled with pride,” Scariolo said.

Scariolo, who has coached Spanish teams Tau Ceramica, Real Madrid and Unicaja Malaga, is the second foreign coach to be hired to lead Spain and the first since Michael Rutzgis led the country from 1951-52.
