You've heard of the Sports Illustrated cover jinx, right?
Well, how about the Sporting News cover jinx.
Ask Troy Percival of the Tampa Bay Rays. A few days after appearing on the cover of the Sporting News, Percival pitched two thirds of an inning in relief then took himself out of a game vs. the White Sox. Said CBS Sportsline:
News: Rays closer Troy Percival left Wednesday's afternoon game against Texas in the top of the ninth inning after twisting his left ankle while making a pitch. He recorded the first two outs of the inning and was in line for a save, but was unable to remain in the game after trying to throw a warmup pitch from the mound. He was replaced by Dan Wheeler, who picked up the final out for the save. Percival will undergo an MRI on Wednesday night.
Analysis: Percival took one pitch from the mound and immediately walked off, which makes us believe he'll be out for at least a couple of games.
