My buddy, Tommy, made a weekend trek out to Lambeau Field to see the Packers defeat the Seattle Seahawks. Next up on his list is Cameron Indoor Center, maybe next year.

One of my many, many friends from Australia sent along a few e-mails, reminding me of the fact the USA team played at a venue that I listed as a place I want to visit.
ReplyDeleteTruth be told, I was thinking of the Rod Laver Arena in terms of the great tennis grand-slam event, not basketball. But here's a pi8ece of the reminder:
The 2000 pre-Olympic game was definitely at Rod Laver Arena – sold out 15,000, Opals v USA women curtain-raiser (we didn’t win that one, either) and referee Bill Mildenhall going down with a dislocated elbow after Vince Carter (yeah, him again) wiped him out.
The game you are thinking of at Vodafone Arena was a year later – 2001 - before the Goodwill Games, which were played in Brisbane. As I recall, that rookie-sophomore team had a few heads that turned into good players: Shawn Marion, Kenyon Martin, Andre Miller, Mike Miller … but there were also one or two duds – a big centre, especially. Can’t think what his name was.
Anyway, look forward to reading your version of the Carter-Gaze tango. One thing I’m sure we are agreed on: it turned a mundane exhibition into a full-on game.
